Indian Airlines is the premier airline of India and is state-owned. The Ministry of Civil Aviation administers this airline that emerged owing to the Air Corporations Act of 1953.
Indian airlines was entrusted the task of offering air transportation within India and to other neighboring countries.
It proved to be one of the domestic airlines in India that was in constant demand.
This airline is based in Delhi and focuses in reinforcing its dominance and offering best services to international passengers as well.
Indian Airlines flights emerged after the nationalization of eight private airlines namely, Airways India, Deccan airways, Himalayan Aviation, Bharat Airways, Indian National Airways, Kalinga Air Lines and Air Services of India.
This airline began modernization in the aviation industry and in 1964 it heralded the initiation of the Jet era.
Airbus A320 was one of the fleets of Indian Airlines introduced in 1990s and worked up to gradation since its inception. After the liberalization in 1990s, many private airlines such as Air Sahara, Jet Airways, ModiLuft and East West Airlines entered the aviation industry, besides the low-cost airlines such as SpiceJet and Air Deccan revolutionized the aviation scenario in India.
Indian Airlines main base are in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai and the airports are Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport and Chennai International Airport.
Indian airlines flights have been the pioneer and were the foremost airline to introduce A300 aircraft in India on the domestic network.
In association with its subsidiary Alliance Air, Indian Airlines flies 70 aircrafts include Airbus A 300, A320, A319, Dornier Do-228, ATR-4 and Boeing 737.
In 2005, many witnessed re-branding and one such re-branding changed the name from Indian Airlines Limited to Indian. This re-branding was done aiming revamping of airlines.
However, the ‘turbaned Maharaja’ clicked the minds of Indian people and became a household name. In 2007 February, the plan of Indian’s merger with Air India was proposed by the Government of India and operated as single entity.
The new airline after post-merger will be named as Air India and is a member of the largest airline Star Alliance.
