Biman Bangladesh Airlines is owned completely by the Government and is the national airline having its hub located at Dhaka, Bangladesh at Zia International Airport. Biman Bangladesh Airlines operates international and domestic services.

This airline was launched on January 04, 1972 as an IATA member under the ordinance of Bangladesh Biman.

It began its operations with DC-3, a vintage Dakota that was gifted by Bangladesh Airforce. Initially, it was known as Air Bangladesh International, but was quickly renamed as Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

Within a short time of its inception, it started its domestic services

in the same year and the initial domestic services were Dhaka to Jessore, Chittagong and Sylhet routes.

Biman Bangladesh flights started plying weekly once to London and initiated its international operations.

Daily flights were begun from Dhaka to Kolkata in April 1972. Over the time, this service was increased to two times a day after purchasing F27s four Fokker aircrafts from Netherlands and Australia.

In 1974, the Biman Bangladesh Airlines increased their operations to Kathmandu, Bangkok and Dubai.

However, to extend its international service to Abu Dhabi, Mumbai and Karachi, it acquired Boeing 707 aircraft. In the year 1977, Bangladesh Government took it under its ownership and was transformed into a public sector corporation.

This airline was appointed by the Government of the country and was governed by Board of Directors. In 1983, expansion business was on and DC10-30s three numbers were added to its fleet.

However, over the years, private players increased in this aviation industry and the market share of Biman Bangladesh airlines declined.

The airline is pursuing its operations both, domestic and international.

Biman Bangladesh flights offer non-stop or at the most one stop service to destinations. This international airlines in India served India from 1972. There were regular flights to Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi.

The destinations of Biman Bangladesh airlines include Middle East, South Asia with India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal, East Asia with Hong Kong and various other Southwest Asian countries.

The flight to Delhi was termination, but is expected to resume sooner. There are special flights to Makkah Al Mukarramah as well.
