Mahan Air was established in Teheran, Iran in 1991 and initiated its operations in 1992.
This is the initial private carrier in Iran and is a new entrant to the civil aviation field. In 2001, Mahan Airline became an International Air Transport Association member.
The hub is located at Tehran - Khomeini International Airport. It started initially with two Tupolev 154 aircraft that took to other domestic destinations from Tehran.
Mahan Air grew at a rapid pace and added Airbus A300 wide-body aircraft in 199 to its fleet.
This airline in 2001 included one more aircraft, Airbus A310 to its fleet. Owing to this addition, this airline could conveniently cover various destinations.
However, in the passing years, it displayed a substantial growth such that the airline acquired 13% business from Iran of all international flights making it to ply nearly 8% of total domestic flights in Iran.
Mahan Airlines though a private airline having its base in Tehran, Iran is also one of the international airlines in India. It has international and domestic flights to the Middle East, Far East and Europe.
As on March 2007, this airline had 1616 employees. Its network covers 12 countries and 28 destinations with a fleet of 11 Airbuses. Mahan Air operates 25 aircrafts including 8 Airbus A300s, 3 A320 Airbus, 3 747 Boeings and 4 A310 Airbus.
It holds nearly 8% domestic flights and 13% international flights from Iran.
Mahan flights covering domestic places are Kish Island, Shiraz, Kerman, Tehran, Bandar Abbas, Birjand, Sirjan, Mahshahr, and many more,
while the international flights cover Bangkok, Delhi, Birmingham, Amritsar, Dubai, Dusseldorf, Baghdad and Denpasar.
Mahan Airline is planning to increase the number of flights to Dubai. In fact in 2008, this airline was considered to be the fast growing airline as it increased its flights strength to Dusseldorf and Bagdad.
However, as the U.S. government denied sanction to purchase direct airplanes to the Iranian Airlines, they purchased airplanes that are above 7 years old.
EU also banned Mahan Air, but wad lifted on July 2008 owing to good progress and improvement showed by the airline.
