Royal Jordanian Airline was established on December 9, 1963, and started its operations in the same year on December 15.
This airline was named as Alia initially, in the name of Princess Alia, King Hussein's first child.
Initially, Royal Jordanian flights flew to Kuwait, Cairo and Beirut from Amman, in its fleet, a Douglas DC-7 aircrafts and two Handley Page Dart Herald.
The service of this airline initiated in 1964 to Jeddah after the inclusion of another Douglas DC-7 to its fleet, but during an Israeli air raid in 1967, DC-7s were destructed and were later replaced by two Fokker F-27 aircrafts.
The end of 1960s was favorable as this airline added more destinations such as Libya, Cyprus, Doha, Istanbul, Tehran, Saudi Arabia and Munich.
In 1971, this airline entered jet age acquiring Boeing 707 aircrafts and initiated its services to Karachi-Pakistan, Madrid-Spain and Copenhagen-Denmark. Later on, Royal Jordanian flights also served Dubai, Rabat, Manama, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Larnaca, New York City, Baghdad, Muscat, Geneva, Vienna, Houston and Damascus as its destinations.
The 1990s saw great expansion in its services offered and the airline added Sri Lanka(Colombo), Canada(Toronto), Jakarta(Indonesia), India(Mumbai), Israel(Aviv), Italy(Milan) and Germany(Berlin).
Owing to these destinations, it is popular most international airlines in India. It also became code sharing partner of TWA, the US carrier.
In 2001, this airline became public shareholding company and war renamed as Alia- the Royal Jordanian Airline and in 2007, it acquired the distinction to join the global airlines alliance, Oneworld.
Royal Jordanian Airline is the Jordan national carrier having its main international hub is sited at Queen Alia International Airport, Amman.
At present, the airline offers international flights daily and weekly from its base hub to numerous destinations, covering almost four continents.
Royal Jordanian Airline is awarded in 2006 ‘Airline Turnaround of the Year 2006’.
In addition, Royal Jordanian Airlines has agreements with Austrian Airlines, Air India, Gulf Air, Thai Airways, Cyprus Airline, US Airways, Syrian Arab Airlines, Yemen Airways and Transworld ion.
This airline operates from Mumbai and New Delhi, the major Indian cities and this has made it the prominent international airlines in India.
