Singapore Airlines is the flag carrier of Singapore and also the national airline.
It started when Malayan Airlines was incepted on October 1937, by the Imperial Airways, the Ocean Steamship Company, Liverpool and the Straits Steamship Company, Singapore.
The first flight of this airline took off on 2 April, 1947 from British Straits Settlement to Kuala Lumpur.
Onwards from 1 May, 1947, the airline plies weekly flights regularly from Singapore to Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur and Penang. In another decade, Singapore Airlines witnessed rapid expansion such that British Commonwealth carriers offered technical assistance.
The prime hub of Singapore Airlines is at Singapore Changi Airport and headquartered at House.
This is one of the four airlines to receive from Skytrax a 5 star rating. Recently, this airline also bagged 33rd position in the Most Admired Companies of the Fortune’s World. This airline offers world-class safety to its passengers and is also a prominent name in the international airlines in India and in the civil aviation industry.
It has shown consistent profitability by maintaining proper records since its inception. In the year 1950s, Malayan Airways expanded its fleet and was re-christened in 1963 to Malaysian Airlines. In 1966, the name was replaced with Malaysia Singapore Airlines and expanded rapidly including more aircrafts and routes.
Malaysia Singapore Airlines in 1972 became two entities forming Malaysian Airlines System and Singapore Airlines. In this separation, Singapore Airlines retained Boeing aircrafts including B707S and 737S.
This airline operated international routes and also carried advertising campaigns creating strong brand image. The airline stewardesses were projected as iconic Singapore girl clad beautifully in the sarong kebaya uniform.
The air services first initiated between Singapore and the USA in 2004 as it started plying non-stop flights using Airbus A340-500 aircraft. The flight to Newark from Singapore was recorded as the longest consuming 18 hours each way.
It also facilitated traveling from Newark to Los Angeles comfortably by converting its A340-500 Airbus to complete 100 seated Business Class.
Singapore Airlines subsidiary, SilkAir operates from Singapore to South Asia, Southeast Asia and China. Now Singapore has 49% share of Tiger Airways operating as cheap Singapore flights within the region.
