The origin of Turkish Airlines can be traced back to May, 1933 when the airline was started as department of Defense Ministry, Turkey. It was named as State Airlines Administration and grew consistently by adding fleets.
In 1935, the airline administration was shifted to Ministry of Public Works and operational control was given to Ministry of Transportation.
The first international flight was inaugurated in Ankara to Athens in 1947. In 1956, the airlines name was changed to Turk Hava Yollari, by a special act of Turkish Parliament.
This followed by infusion of fresh funds 60 million TL into airline to upgrade, increase fleet and expand its operations. The airline improved its performance in 1984 with the induction of Douglas DC-9 Jets into its fleet. In 1993, Turkish Air Transportation (THT) merged with Turkish Airline.
Turkish Airlines flights cover around 175 destinations in five continents. In Asia, the airline flies to Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, China, South Korea, India, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Pakistan.
In Middle East Turkish Airline covers Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Yeman, Dubai, Sharjah, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Iraq and Iran.
