It started its operation at a small plant in Port Okha. This company moved its plant to Uttarparain 1948 where it started manufacturing the automobile named the ambassador.

The Hindustan Ambassador was used as a government limousine and taxicab. The car compares to Morris Oxford which was a British car back in 1954.

This company was considered the largest producer of cars before the rise of Maruti Udyog. Hindustan Motors has grown tremendously and now has state of the art facilities for the manufacturing of trucks, utility vehicles and passenger cars.

Hindustan Milestones
After the Hindustan Motors company was started in 1942, a couple of years later it diversified its activities and opened an earth moving equipment division near Chennai. This division was started for the purpose of manufacturing dumpers, crawler tractors, and front end loaders.

In 1985, a power product division was commenced for the production of heavy duty transmission. This company kept on opening plants and in 1986 the commercial vehicle division was opened at Vadodara. After a couple of months the company realized that the material and project cost was too high.

As a result the whole project was abandoned and part of the assets they had already acquired in the process were sold to General Motors India Ltd. The assets were used to manufacture passenger cars in the premium sector named Opel Astra. In 1987, Hindustan Motors India collaborated with Isuzu Motors Japan and produced transmission and petrol engines at Pithampur India.

At that time the company decided to do some upgrading and in 1996, it expanded its 3 divisions which were the power plant, Uttarpara plant and the earth moving equipment division. This helped the company grow to offer more services. Since they were now able to manufacture more products, money increased and they decided to produce the road trusted vehicle in 1997.

This opened doors for the production of the famous Mitsubishi Lancer car a year later. In 2001 Caterpillar USA bought the company’s earth moving division. In 2002, Hindustan Motors worked together with Mitsubishi Motors Japan and launched Mitsubishi Pajero in India. This automobile company in India has also worked with General Motors and produced Allison Transmissions, Vauxhall and Bedford trucks. This company has proved that working together with other companies can help you grow to be better.
