Ownership And Renaming
Swaraj Mazda Limited was established in 1983 and is a publically listed company with the public holding 27.65% of the shares.

The largest share holder of Swaraj Mazda Sumitomo Corporation, Japan, with 41.03%, thereafter is Punjab Tractors Ltd (PTL) with 14.04% followed by Mutual Funds/Nationalised Banks and FIIs with 7.97% and 9.31% shareholding respectively.

Although the company was established in 1983, it did not start its operations until 1985. The company also receives technical support from Isuzu Motors of Japan.

In 2007, the company applied to have its name changed to Swaraj Vehicles as it wanted to do away with the name ‘Mazda’ after the expiration of its technical contract with the Japanese company ended in 2004.

Business Interests and Production
For the financial year 1997-1998, Swaraj Mazda (Vehicles) Limited had an annual turnover of $US 3,037,614. The company’s associate companies are Punjab Scooters and Swaraj Engines. The company entered into a new collaborative contract with Isuzu Motors in June 2006, to receive technical assistance on diesel engine technology.

Isuzu Motors also injected $75 million, for the construction of two manufacturing plants near the already existing manufacturing site in Ropar, Punjab state. One of the plants will have a production capacity of 12,000 cars per year and will make Isuzu vehicles. The second site will produce bus bodies and have a production capacity of 7,000 units per year.

The completion of these two production sites will make Swaraj Mazda (Vehicles) the largest coach making company in India, which is already capturing 53% of its current sales through the sales of buses and coaches. The company aims to focus more on the production of these vehicles as well as heavy commercial vehicles, whose production started in 2008.

Swaraj Mazda India is a manufacturer of light commercial vehicles such as buses, ambulances, police personnel carriers, trucks, water tanks and other special purpose vehicles. The company makes light commercial vehicles like buses, trucks, police personnel carriers, water tankers, ambulances, and special vehicles. They also manufacture passenger cars and there are approximately 150,000 Mazda’s on Indian roads today.

Swaraj Mazda Limited, exports its vehicles to numerous countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Seychelles, Syria, Jordan, Ghana and Bangladesh. With the expansion of the tourism industry in India, the company intends to focus most of its attention on the luxury coaches so as to cater for the growing demand of these types of light commercial vehicles.
