Automobile Business Interests
Tata Motors is one of the largest passenger and commercial automobile companies in India. In 2006, the International Organisation of Motor Vehicles Manufactures, ranked Tata Motor’s as the world’s 20th largest automakers based on that year’s performance.

Tata Motors entered the small passenger car market in 1992, after years having dominated the commercial vehicle market. They did this with the introduction of the Tata Sierra, followed by the Indica, in 1998, which was India’s first fully indigenous vehicle.

In 2004, Tata Motors acquired Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company, South Korea so as to increase its global presence and also as part of diversifying its risk exposure in the commercial vehicle market. At the local level, the demand for domestic commercial vehicles is cyclical and prone to the domestic market fluctuations.

Come 2005, Tata Motors saw the opportunities to be made in the manufacture of fully built buses. It therefore went ahead and acquires a 21% shareholding in Aragonese and Hispano Carrocera SA bus manufacturing companies. With that acquisition, Tata Motors introduced high-end inter-city buses into India.

Tata Motors have also formed a joint venture partnership with Marcopolo S.A., a leading Brazil-based bus body building company. This partnership will see the development and manufacture of fully assembled coaches and buses for the mass rapid transportation system.

Tata Motors acquired Ford’s Jaguar and Land Rover operations US$ 2 billion on 27th March 2008. In this shareholding acquisition, Tata holds the rights to Rover, Lanchester, and Daimler, brand names. In June 2008, Tata Motors acquired the Daimler, Lanchester and Rover brand names from Ford Motor Company at the cost of US$ 2 billion.

The Indian company has also acquired access to tow design centres and three manufacturing plants in the UK, with together with the intellectual property rights, as the main acquisition.
