Ownership
In 1985, Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd, Japan, made its first foray into the Indian market. It was not until 1996 however, that Yamaha decided to settle down in India by way of a 50/50 joint venture with Escorts Group.
Five years later, in 2001, Yamaha Motors acquired the remaining 50% to become a fully owned Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd, Japan subsidiary.
In 2008 in a strategic alliance to expand its market share, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd, Japan again entered into an agreement with Mitsui & Co. Ltd who became joint investors in the motorcycle company that is now called India Yamaha Motor Private Limited (IYM).
Prior to this, Yamaha Motors India’s incorporation in August 2001, the company had already been operating for twenty years in the technology industry.
Business Interests
Yamaha Motors India has two manufacturing plants in India. One is located in Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh. This plant mainly focuses on the marketing, sales and after sales functions for Yamaha Motors.
The other site located in Faridabad in Haryana, concentrates on research and development to improve on quality as well as production and export of the motorcycles. With a work force of over 2,000 employees at both these locations, this automobile company produces motorcycles for the export and domestic markets.
India is a highly competitive market, which has caused this leading automobile company India to pursue a high customer focus business strategy. The company has more than 400 dealers countrywide and produces ten types of motorcycles with engine capacities as low a 106 cc to huge 1670 cc motorcycles.
Yamaha Motors India’s main competitor in the Indian motorcycle market is Honda, specifically the Hero Honda and the Bajaj. To break this hold, Yamaha Motors has opted to pursue a three pronged business strategy.
Firstly they are pursuing a very aggressive customer satisfaction program by delivering quality services. Secondly is research and development so as to develop and deliver high quality products. Finally is optimising internal processes and the working system.
