Bullying at work is one of the tricks most employers adopt to keep the employees on hook. Bullying constitutes drastic cut in resources and staffing, maximizing workloads, linking pays to performance, leave cuts, increased working hours and reducing amenities.
According to a recent survey conducted, bullying at work accounts for 50% of work related stress.
At many times the bullying is done by the management and the superiors.
This includes intimidation, coercive measures, aggressive approaches, sexual harassment or racial discrimination.
Bullying at work is exercised against any individual or group who is not in a position to safeguard self.
Effects of bullying at work
Bullying at work is a bad practice as it affects the victims physically and mentally as well. People feel vulnerable, frustrated and isolated that there is increase in their stress levels.
They experience problems such as frequent headaches, weight loss, kidney disorders and ulcers.
It also affects their relationships with co-workers and family as well.
As a result, the individual productivity falls down below average. Identifying the bullying at the earlier stage will put victims in stronger position.
Normally, the new joiners or recent promoted employees face bullying at workplace more often. Many bosses resort to these practices in order to assert their supremacy from the very beginning.
Managing bullying at work
Managing bullying is a difficult task as no employer will directly resort to bullying tactics. Often methods adopted in bullying seem to be legitimate, mimicking the real situation.
Only reading between the lines will make one understand the bullying. Owing to this reason, victims may not be in a position to confront the bullying tactics directly.
However, bullying at work can be managed by collective actions such as dialog between the unions and employers.
In case of individual victimization, the affected person can take-up the matter directly to the person who is resorting to such tactics.
Bullying at work is not a good practice as persuasion is the best policy than coarsen in achieving better result.
