Trichur
The small town of Kerala Trichur is dominated by the megnificent vaddakumathan temple
Dedicated to shiva in his manifestation as the lord of the North, it crowns the centre of a
sprawling Maidan. The magnificent temple tuskers of Kerala take over the placid town of
Trichur, to orchestrate one of the most extravagant shows of all time the Trichur Pooram.
every Summer, during the astrological occurance of the Pooramstar the town musters
its collective might to celebrate the pooram festival. The Mammoth scale of unabashed
fanfare, that has become the hallmark of trichur Pooram, was eveidentlyenvisaged by
Sakthan Thampuran, the ruler of Cochin, nearly two centuries ago. And the show has go
on in its true form ever since.
The three main temples of trichur, Thiruvambady, Paramekkavu and vadakkuanthan are
radically transformed into centres attracting pious pilgrims. Many residents find their
place in the serpentine queuse inching into the temple building, where on the eve of
the festivalthe temple tuskers are displyed with exotic umbrellas in silk , brokade,
jacquard and satin fringed with exquisite silver work. each elephant serpasses the other
in style and presentation.
The Pooram is not only the extravagent festival in kerala, but also the most expensive.
The total expenditure is met by voluntary donation from temple devotees. On pooram
day the rolling beat of drums and accompanying horns and cymbals can be heard all
over trichur. One by one, according to their timetable, the various deities arrive at the
great peepul tree. out side the Vaddakemathan temple and then disperse.
Once the capital of old cochin state, Trichur changed hands from the Zamorin or ruler
of Cochin to Tipu Sultan,the ruler of Mysore, in the 18th century. Trichur has the highest
percentage of literacy in india as the centre of kerala state's literature and music
acaddemies. Near by is the Peechi Dam , apicnic spot which also provides swimming
and Boating facilities. Guruvayoor., 29 Kms from Trichur, is one of the most popular
Hindu Pilgrim centre in India. It has a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. Legend has it
that the idol was installed and consecrated by the Guru or perceptor of Gods, along
with the God of air, Vayu, the name Guruvayoor mens the city of Guru and Vayu . It is
said that the a renowned Sanskrit scholer Melpachathoor Narayana Bhattathiri
(16th century) wrote a devotional poem called Narayaneeyam as his offering to the deity
and as a consequence was cured of a serious illness. A great Camatic musician is said
to have regained his voice through his devotion to the deity. The Krishnattam dance, a
precursor of the Kathakali dance, is performed here at the annual temple festival held in
February-March. Non Hindus are not allowed inside.
Cheruthuruthy, 36 kms from Trichur, is known for music and dance academy,
kalamandalam, founded by the poet Valathol Narayana Manon (in 1930) who was
responsable for reviving Kerala's treditional art forum of which Kathakali is one. The
Institution offer courses in music and dance with emphasis on Kathakali , Mohiniattam,
Thullal, and other dances. Mannarsala, 100 kms from Cochin, has a snke temple, the
Nagarjuna temple . The temple is the site for the festival in august, November and
December Palghat, 79 kms from Trichur and 163 kms from Cochin, has a fort build by
Haider Ali in 1766 , beside the Malampuzha Dam. Thadam 14 kms from palghat, is
picturesque spot on the river Bharathpuzha.There are beautiful landscaped garden here
which are illuminated during weekends. There are also special attraction for childrens
like a toy Train , mini Zoo , aquarium, swimming Pool, Boating .
