Festivals in India- Dussehra

Dussehra falls in September and is an excitement. This is a popular festival and is celebrated on the tenth day of the Hindu month Ashvin.

Dusherra is enveloped with interesting mythological legends as well as regional tales.

The Hindu epic, Ramayana tells that Ravana, the unrighteous Lanka king was killed by Rama, the god-king.

Rama believed Goddess Durga and prayed for the initial nine days and killed her on the tenth day. Hence, Ramlila is enacted in towns as well as villages.

There are more legends and popular mythology showing indomitable powers that were received due to unparalleled meditation.

Dusherra is a festival celebrated in the aim of worshipping Durga. Dussehra is celebrated in Bengal and is called as Durga Puja. This is the main festival for Bengalis.

The main function enacted these ten days is the Ram Lila that is conducted in the open ground with bright lit stalls, merry-go-rounds, manual giant wheels and various other shops identical to the fairs.

Gigantic Ravana effigies are erected and on the last day of the Ram Lila it is set ablaze. Crowds gather to enjoy the spectacle and exploding effigies.

Ram Lila is held every year and people flock in major numbers and enjoy the saga. The perfectly celebrated place for Ram Lila is the Old Delhi enveloping the Red Fort. This has religious and social significance.

Dussehra is celebrated for ten days and offers a purifying experience. However, during this festival it is expected to abstain drinking and smoking. It is also necessary to remain celibate.

The Ram Lila is done with reverence that people touch the feet of the artists. This is particularly well celebrated in Mysore, Karnataka and in Gujarat in Ahmedabad.

The spectacular scenes are worth watching and joining the procession is admirable. The Goddess Durga is worshipped all the ten days. Many people go fasting for all the ten days and this festival is done with great pomp and enthusiasm.

Dussehra holidays are enjoyed by all, especially the schools. These ten days feature a complete revolution as the market streets and the places where Durga puja is done looks very lively and colorful.

Lots of songs are sung in praise of the Goddess and charity of food is given daily. People from far and wide are offered food to eat. Moreover, they also conduct lovely dance programs to please the god and the viewers are very much attracted.

This is a festival that brings all the people under one roof in the name of the festive and is enjoyed well as the festive mood engulfs other unwanted thoughts and notions.
