Sarah was trained in singing and ballet and was given a role in the Broadway production of The Innocents, which encouraged and to an extent impelled her family to transfer to New Jersey. She was a professional performer at the American Ballet School and the Professional Children's School. Here first role was at age 8 when she tried out for a local production of The Little Match Girl, and eventually got the part.
She was then given a role in the movie The Sound of Music and that’s how she actually got a role as the lead in the Broadway run of Annie. After about a year or so, Sarah attended Dwight Morrow High School, while enduring to include additional glory to her acting resume. Along the same time she got a role in the made-for-TV movie My Body, My Child before being cast as one of the main leading roles.
Once Sarah became a graduate she had made up her mind to follow a full-time acting career as an alternative of continuing her education. She then moved on to supporting film roles in movies such as Somewhere Tomorrow (1983), Footloose (1984), Firstborn (1984), and the lead role in the teenage chick flick Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985).
