LANGTANG TREK

The Langtang valley is aptly called 'the valley of glaciers.' Here, mountains rise soaring towards the sky. The valley offers pine forest, swift mountain streams, rugged rock and snow-capped peaks, grassy downs and meadows strewn with daisies and wild primulas. In the upper part of the valley there are snow ridges spanning angry torrents, high passes enveloped in mist, tiny lakes of crystalline brightness and glaciated mountain giants.

Day 1 Kathmandu - Dhunche - Syabru Bensi
Drive to Syabru Bensi via Trisuli Bazaar and Dhunche.

Day 2 Syabru Bensi - Khanjung - Syarpagoan
We climb through a variety of small villages and tracts of dense forest. In the afternoon, a traverse of 3 hours brings us to the village of Syarpagoan.

Day 3 Syarpagoan -Lama Hotel
From Syarpagoan, the trail winds up and down through the forest to Ghora Tabela.

Day 4 Lama Hotel -Langtang Valley
From here a short climb brings us to a pass to the right of where the Langtang valley begins.

Day 5 Langtang valley to Kyangjin Gompa
From the pass, the trail leads to the large village of Langtang before ascending a ridge dotted with tiny villages. As the valley widens, we climb up through yak pastures to Kyangjin.

Day 6 Kyangjin Gompa
An excellent look-out can be reached by climbing the slopes immediately behind the Kyangjin. The majestic 7200m Langtang Lirung rises above the glaciers. A visit to Cheese factory completes the day. It is really a good experience to try a climb to Tsergo Ri (5033m.)

Day 7 Kyangjin - Ghora Tabela
Then back to Langtang by the same route.

Day 8 Ghora Tabela to Syabru
Trek back to Syabru by the same route.

Day 9 Syabru - Sing Gompa
Today we climb through forests of fir and rhododendron. The only signs of human habitation are the occasional shepherds' huts at the water points. We camp near Sing Gompa and cheese factory.

Day 10 Sing Gompa - Gosainkunda
We follow a rugged trail with dramatic views; to the west lie Himal Chuli (7893m.,) Manaslu (8156m,) and Ganesh Himal (7406m.) On a clear day even the Annapurna range can be seen rising up behind and to the north across the valley is Langtang Lirung. We pass a few huts in the high pasture of Laurebina, cross a small ridge and have our first views of the holy lakes. There are about a dozen lakes in the Gosainkunda Basin, the main three being Saraswatikund, Bharab Kunda and Gosainkunda. According to legend, Gosainkunda was created by Shiva when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after having swallowed a poison that threatened to destroy the world.

Day 11 Gosainkunda - Thare Pati
We continue over rugged trails and pass several other smaller lakes to the Thare Pati pass (4602m,) then descend to the tree line. The trail runs past beautiful waterfalls, through juniper and rhododendron forests. We descend to the huts of Thare Pati.

Day 12 Thare Pati - Gul Bhanjyang
We drop steadily all day through fir and rhododendron forests and then through prickly-leaved Oak forests. We camp at the Tamang village of Gul Bhanjyang. This ridge walk provides excellent views of the mountains and the Helambu valley.

Day 13 Gul Bhanjyang - Chisopani
Today's walk consists of gentle ups and downs, following a ridge to our campsite just above Chisopani (2194m,) from where there are excellent views of the Himalayan range from Manaslu to Everest.

Day 14 Chisopani - Kathmandu
We climb to the small pass at Burlang Bhanjyang ( 2438m.) and take our last look at the great line of snow peaks of the Himalaya before descending to Sundarijal and the drive to Kathmandu.
