Sports in India - Tennis

Tennis is a sport in India and has gained prominence. This is a sport played using racquets between two players.

This spot is played as singles such as each team will have single player on either side and also as doubles where each team has two players.

The racquet is used to strike a rubber ball that comes covered in felt. The net is placed in the centre of the court. This is also referred to as lawn tennis so that it is distinguished from real tennis.

The same tennis is also called as court tennis or royal tennis. This is a game that is for indoors.

Tennis was a fashionable sport of noblemen and kings during the 16th to 18th centuries. This was known as the game of the palm. The significant development in the tennis history came in the form of Wimbledon championship in 1877 played in London.

The sports called tennis continued with its development and this was supported with radio broadcast. In 1933, the foremost player, Bunny Austin, USA player stepped on to the court with shorts and this became the dress code eventually.

The tennis court is rectangular and a flat surface having grass, concrete or some hard surface of clay or asphalt. The court for singles is 78x 27 feet and for doubles it is 78 by 36 feet. Tennis is enjoyed in India as a sport and some of the players have accomplished their achievements.

British incepted tennis in India as a sport in 1880s. Tennis as a game grasped its roots and resulted in certain tournaments at Lahore in the name of Punjab Lawn tennis championship, All India tennis championships at Allahabad and at Calcutta as Bengal Lawn tennis championship

. All India tennis association came into establishment after some years of inception and became the governing body. The All India tennis associations conducted national as well as international tournaments and gained lots of fame and recognition.

Some of the dominant players such as Premjit Lal, Ramanathan Krishnan and Jaidip Mukerjha excelled the game such that the complete scenario got transformed.

Later on, the threads were taken by Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes. This was also annexed by many grand slam titles from Karan Rastogi, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna.
