Fastest Olympic Runners from India
Olympic is an international sporting event which features summer and winter sports celebration where thousands of athletes from different countries participate.
Being organized after every four years, this is one of the most prestigious events in the world. Over 200 nations participate in this event to bring glory and honour to their countries.
The running events in Olympics include:
- Sprint: Sprint events include 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter dashes and 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Individual sprinters and leadoff relay runners and the only athletes who begin in starting blocks.
- Marathon: It is a tradition in this prestigious sporting event, to make the marathon, a long distance run to be the last event of the athletic calendar.
- 110 meters and 400 meters Hurdles: This is a race in a hurdling track. In a 110 meters hurdle race, ten hurdles of height 3.5 ft are placed evenly in a straight course of 110 meters. Similarly in the case of 400 meters hurdle, ten hurdles are placed evenly over a course of 400 meters which is the inside length once around the stadium.
India has earned glory through some of her fastest runners who participated in this prestigious event. Some of the fastest Indian runners are:
Sriram Singh: One of the fastest runners from India, Sriram Singh, born 1984 in Rajasthan, joined the Rajputana Rifles in 1968. He then came under the influence of coach llyas Babar who made him shift his focus from 400 meters to 800 meters. He scored the high point in his career in the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the 800 meters race.
Milkha Singh: Also known as “The Flying Sikh” Milkha Singh is the former Indian field and track sprint, one of the fastest Indian runners. This Indian Olympic runner was a former army man who went to sports while serving the army. Milkha Singh represented India in Olympics in 1956, 1960 and 1964 in Melbourne, Rome and Tokyo respectively. He is remembered for the 1960 Olympic race where is finished in the fourth place.
P.T. Usha: Also known as the queen of Indian track and field, P.T. Usha is one of the fastest Indian runners and has been associated with Indian athletics since 1979. She is also hailed as “Sprint Queen”, “Golden Girl” and “Payyoli Express”. She missed the Olympics bronze by 1/100th of a second. This Indian lady is a source of inspiration to a generation of young Indian women athletes.
